PSHE inculding RSHE (Jigsaw)

Intent

To provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community.

Pupils will take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities. In doing so they will learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. Pupils at Burston & Tivetshall Primary Schools will reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. Children will learn to understand and respect their common humanity; diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

Using the scheme of work Jigsaw, PSHE and RSE at Burston & Tivetshall Primary Schools will support the development of the skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which enable pupils to:

• Have a sense of purpose

• Value self and others

• Form relationships

• Make and act on informed decisions

• Communicate effectively

• Work with others

• Respond to challenge

• Be an active partner in their own learning

• Be active citizens within the local community

• Explore issues related to living in a democratic society

• Become healthy and fulfilled individuals

Implementation

Whole-school approach Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE for the primary phase including statutory Relationships and Health Education. The table below gives the learning theme of each of the six Puzzles (units) and these are taught across the school; the learning deepens and broadens every year.

Jigsaw

Jigsaw brings together: PSHE education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development.

At our schools', at least 45 minutes of direct PSHE teaching and learning is allocated each week in order to teach the PSHE knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way.

These explicit lessons are reinforced and enhanced in many ways: Assemblies and collective worship, praise and reward system (MARK), Learning Charter, through relationships child to child, adult to child and adult to adult across the school.

SRE

At Burston &Tivetshall Primary Schools, we believe children should understand the facts about human reproduction before they leave primary school. We teach sex education to our children in the Summer term following the legal requirement to do so.

Effective SRE can make a significant contribution to the development of the personal skills needed by pupils if they are to establish and maintain relationships. It also enables children and young people to make responsible and informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

The Learning Environment: In order to get the best outcome from a Jigsaw session it will be necessary to establish a safe, open and positive learning environment based on trusting relationships between all members of the class, adults and children alike. To enable this, it is important that ‘ground rules’ are agreed and owned at the beginning of the year by using the Learning Charter.

British Values and Protected Characteristics

At our schools, British Values are Protected Characteristics are built into our RE and PSHE/RSE schemes of learning so that children develop an age-appropriate knowledge and understanding.

Impact

PSHE is based on many discussions. Teachers will continue to assess children throughout the sessions. Jigsaw has an assessment task with each puzzle which can be used at the discretion of the teacher.

The PSHE leader will monitor delivery of the programme through observation and discussion with teaching staff and children to ensure consistent and coherent curriculum provision.
